In conjunction with the non-profit Trees for the Future, and with Santa Leticia farm operators Ricardo and Mauricio Valdivieso, 15,000 shade trees were planted in the Ucraprobex Cooperative in the Alpaneca coffee growing region. These trees were planted for shade and will provide a huge offset to area carbon output.

The canopy of these shade trees will provide a cool habitat for birds that could have been displaced by low-growing coffee shrubs. Not only do the trees conserve water, they also protect the coffee plants from too much rain and sun. Further, the trees help maintain overall soil health and their deeper root systems prevent topsoil erosion. Mangoes and papaya from these trees also provides the farmers with another income source.
