We’re thrilled to be recognized for our franchise program since this is a passion area of ours: delivering great coffee and barista service to more and more people throughout the U.S. Our franchisees and their teams are a huge part of our story!
About the Franchise 500® Ranking
Entrepreneur’s 43rd annual ranking shines a light on the unique challenges and changes that have shaped franchises over the last year. Wow, there have been a lot! It also recognizes how franchises have pivoted, adapted, evolved and even grown amid big shifts in the small business climate. From pandemic mandates to global inflation, franchises in all industries have had to be more resilient than ever to keep delivering on their brand promises (for us, that’s creating happy people through outstanding coffee and top-notch service).
The Franchise 500 ranking spans industries from coffee to pizza, gyms to hardware stores. To be on this list with some of the names we’ve known since childhood is both inspiring and humbling — especially as the list of submissions grows every year!
According to Entrepreneur: “The attraction of franchising clearly hasn’t faded, as hundreds of newer companies have been submitted for our list, resulting in a record-breaking number of applicants.”
Factors That Determine Franchise 500 Ranking
In evaluating overall franchise ranking, the folks at Entrepreneur are looking at:
- Costs and fees, including total investment and royalties (if any)
- Support from franchises, like training, marketing, operational support and more
- Size and growth rate
- Brand strength, including social media presence, years in business, and years franchising
- Financial strength
The Franchise 500 team pours over lots and lots of data (starting in June the year prior) to determine which businesses will make the cut. On our part, we were required to submit a Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) to be fully transparent about our operations and franchising program. We and all the others were scored based on more than 150 data points, and then granted our overall ranking. It’s been thrilling to see our score go up year after year!
About The Human Bean Franchise Program
So what is it about our franchise program that thrust us onto this national list of top franchises? Unlike nearly all other franchises, we do not charge percentage-of-sales royalty fees. That means successful drive-thrus keep their profits. Instead, we earn revenues from bulk sales of coffee and other supplies ordered from our franchised locations.
At The Human Bean, we work as a team with our franchisees; our franchisees don’t work for us by paying high royalties that take away from their bottom line. From finding the perfect drive-thru site to speciality training, we offer support and expertise from beginning to end when our franchisees open their own locations. During the launch phase, we get to know the owners and their teams, and they become a part of The Human Bean family!

Are we thrilled with this year’s ranking? You betcha! We first landed on the Top 500 Franchise scene in 2012, and have held a place for the last 10 years. Last year in 2021, we busted through to the Top 100 at #97. This year, we’re happy to scoot our way further up yet again to #88, and we plan to keep going!
Last year, we were also named the #2 coffee franchise by Entrepreneur. What does this year hold for that recognition? We can’t wait to find out!
